[Video] Should Mark / Addison have lasted on Grey’s Anatomy? Kate Walsh shares her thoughts

Emily in Paris, 13 Reasons Why, Sprung, Bad Judge, Fargo, The Umbrella Academy… Over the years, Kate Walsh has become a familiar face on the small screen, but it’s thanks to her role as Addison Montgomery on Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice that the actress has made a name for herself worldwide. Attending First Responders Reunion 4, a convention dedicated to the Grey’s Anatomy universe and 9-1-1: Lone Star, on December 7 and 8, the actress had the opportunity to look back on her experiences on the series created by Shonda Rhimes. In response to a question from a fan, she spoke specifically about the couple that Addison and Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) formed.

While Addison Montgomery is introduced on Grey’s Anatomy as the wife of Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), we soon learn that she has had an affair with her husband’s best friend, Mark Sloan. This affair prompted Derek to flee New York for Seattle and Mark to come to Seattle Grace Hospital to win Addison back. A maneuver that doesn’t work out as well as Mark might have hoped. But according to Kate Walsh, could the couple that Mark and Addison formed have worked on Grey’s Anatomy?

The actress begins her answer by saying, “Anything is possible. […] He really wanted it to work,” before adding that, in her opinion, the script was the right one: “It worked out perfectly because I drove my convertible away to the sunny beaches of Santa Monica.” A reference to Private Practice, the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off in which she starred for six seasons alongside KaDee Strickland, Paul Adelstein, Taye Diggs and Amy Brenneman.

Eric Dane returned to his role as Mark Sloan on Private Practice during a brief visit to Addison. A sequence that KaDee Strickland (Charlotte King), also a guest on First Responders Reunion 4, thoroughly enjoyed: “I loved that scene. It’s funny, I saw that recently […] because I thought we were going to do a panel with him (the three of them were supposed to be at a convention in Chicago, ed.). […] Kate Walsh makes it look fun in the bedroom when you watch her.” To which Kate Walsh wryly replies, “There was a lot of practice. She was with Karev, Derek, Mark, Taye, Benjamin, the cop. So, so many. It was Shonda’s fantasy (laughs)”.
