A few days after officially announcing the adaptation of the webtoon Get Schooled, Netflix has announced the start of production on Scandals, another series adapted from a Korean work. Inspired by the 2003 film Untold Scandal, itself based on the novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses (Dangerous Connections) by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, this K-drama will plunge us into a daring and dangerous game of seduction in the Joseon Dynasty.
According to Netflix’s press release, the series will be set in “in a time when harboring desires was forbidden” and will feature “characters who challenge the strict order of society and engage in a risqué game of love and temptation.” To portray these characters, the streaming platform will be able to count on some familiar names, as it has been confirmed that Son Ye-jin (Crash Landing You, Thirty Nine), Ji Chang-wook (Welcome to Samdal-ri, Healer) and Nana (Into the Ring, Mask Girl) will star in the series directed by Jung Ji-woo (Somebody, Tune in for Love).
In Scandals, Netflix subscribers will follow the story of Lady Cho (Son Ye-jin), a woman as intelligent as she is charismatic, willing to defy the conventions of her time. It is she who initiates a risky bet with her admirer, Cho Won (Ji Chang-wook). Known as Joseon’s greatest playboy, Cho Won is a man who values pleasure over duty. Together, they embark on a relationship where desire and manipulation merge. The series will also follow Hui-yeon (Nana), a widow determined to maintain her chastity after the loss of her husband, but despite her resolve, she has conflicting emotions as she experiences an attraction to Cho Won.
At the time of writing, no release date has been announced by Netflix, but this new K-drama should please fans of romance and historical series.
