Emilia Clarke is set to multiply her TV projects in the coming months. The actress, who is set to star in the Prime Video series Criminal alongside Charlie Hunnam and Luke Evans, has just been announced as the lead in the series Ponies.
Developed by Peacock and created by Susanna Fogel (Chasing Life) and David Iserson (New Girl), the new series is set in Moscow in 1997 and follows two “ponies” – ‘persons of no interest’ in intelligence speak – who work as secretaries at the American embassy. But when their husbands are killed under mysterious circumstances in the USSR, they become CIA operatives, trying to uncover a vast Cold War conspiracy while solving their husbands’ murders.
Emilia Clarke stars as Bea, a Russian-speaking, overeducated daughter of Soviet immigrants. Bea’s colleague, Twila, is described as an acerbic and fearless young woman from a small town. We don’t know yet who will play this character.
In addition to starring, Emilia Clarke, best known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, will executive produce alongside Susanna Fogel and David Iserson. At the time of writing, Peacock had not announced a broadcast date for the Ponies series.
