Good news for fans of House of the Dragon! According to a recent press release from HBO, filming for Season 3 has officially begun in the UK. The series was renewed for a third season in June 2024, shortly before season 2 aired, thus confirming the American network’s confidence in the Game of Thrones prequel.

With 8 episodes on the schedule, Season 3 will once again dive into the tumultuous history of the Targaryen dynasty, two hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones. House of Dragon fans will be reunited with Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen), Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen), Olivia Cooke (Alicent Hightower), Steve Toussaint (Lord Corlys Velaryon), Rhys Ifans (Ser Otto Hightower) and Fabien Frankel (Ser Criston Cole), among others.

These familiar faces will be joined by two new actors in Season 3, as confirmed in the HBO press release. Tommy Flanagan, best known for his role on Sons of Anarchy, joins House of the Dragon as Ser Roderick Dustin, commander of the Winter Wolves, a group of northern warriors fighting for Rhaenyra’s cause. Meanwhile, Dan Fogler, who played Jacob Kowalski in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, will play Ser Torrhen Manderly, another of Rhaenyra’s supporters in George R.R. Martin‘s novel. Previously, HBO confirmed the addition of James Norton (Happy Valley) as Ormund Hightower.

House of the Dragon Season 3 will be directed by Clare Kilner, Nina Lopez-Corrado, Andrij Parekh and Loni Peristere under the direction of Ryan Condal, showrunner and co-creator of the series.
