Since its launch on Netflix in 2022, the Heartstopper series has won over millions of viewers worldwide, and the adaptation of Alice Oseman‘s graphic novels has quickly become a favorite on the streaming platform. At Dream It Fest Paris 2 on March 22 and 23, 2025, three cast members – Joe Locke (Charlie Spring), Jenny Walser (Tori Spring), and Tobie Donovan (Isaac Henderson) – shared their thoughts on the series’ unexpected impact across the world and generations.
“We didn’t expect it”: The cast is moved by Heartstopper’s reception
When asked about the show’s global impact and the fact that they have become ambassadors for the LGBTQIA+ community, the cast expressed both gratitude and surprise. Joe Locke revealed: “I think we’re all very grateful for the impact the show has had, and I think when we were making it, season one, we didn’t expect that to happen, and it’s really nice that it’s had such a positive impact on people”. A sentiment echoed by Tobie Donovan: “It was such a surprise, but we never made the show to be ambassadors […] we made it because we thought it was special”.
Jenny Walser, for her part, emphasizes the intergenerational aspect of Heartstopper, a point also made by the person who interviewed her about the show’s impact: “I love that it is intergenerational as well […] it’s not just for young audience that you sort of might assume.”
At a second panel at Dream It Fest Paris 2, the trio reiterated that they never expected Heartstopper to be such a success. Were you surprised by the worldwide success of the Netflix adaptation? Let us know in the comments.
