Donald Sutherland, a key figure on the big screen, has died at the age of 88 after a long illness, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

His son, Kiefer Sutherland, confirmed the news in a post on X paying tribute to his father: “With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”

Donald Sutherland, who received an honorary Oscar for his career in 2017, is best known for his roles in The Dirty Dozen, MASH, Klute, National Lampoon’s Animal House, Casanova, Ordinary People, and Pride and Prejudice. On the small screen, Donald Sutherland has appeared in a number of projects including Crossing Lines, Dirty Sex Money, Commander in Chief, Trust, Swimming with Sharks and Lawmen: Bass Reeves.
